Without Facebook

I recently deactivated my Facebook account just to step away from ONE FORM of social media while I prepare for dental school finals. I was wasting my time on Gizmodo when I came across an article titled “Without Facebook, We’d Have No Sense of Self: Agree or Disagree?” and it immediately caught my attention. The article just makes a point or 2 about how Facebook reassures us about our very own existence. What I really liked was a comment made by Andrew Tarantola:

…I don’t think Facebooking prompts any form of meaningful self reflection. Logging the minutia of your life isn’t a self-reflective act, it’s self-adulation. It’s you thumping a virtual chest, screaming into the darkness of the Internet that “Hey, I’m here! I did this! Ain’t it cool?”

Does simply listing every single thing you do help you mature or grow in any manner? Is the cataloging of your existence accompanied by critical thought on those actions with an eye for future improvement? If not, then all you are doing is seeking approval–a cheap slap on the back from your FB friends to convince you that your place in the universe isn’t as insignificant a speck as everyone makes it out to be.

Disclaimer: This opinion is coming from a guy who also was never, ever, never on Facebook until Blam told him that he couldn’t work here unless he got one set up.”

I feel like this is talking about me. Or the other 900 million users. I’m guilty of wanting to convince myself that I’m more than just an insignificant blip on the timeline of the universe. Maybe I just have self esteem issues. Do we have to assume that in 20 years it is the norm to have a Facebook – to have it represent and confirm your very existence the way old photo albums or stories from your aunt about how you broke your wrist as a kid while riding your bike did 15 years ago?

Where are we going with this and is it really making our lives BETTER? I don’t think EASE or CONVENIENCE was ever the issue. If anything, we’re becoming Japan: A socially inept nation who puts priority to interacting with any form of a digital display over making intimate human connections.

Damn The Law

Incipio has this fucking sweet Nintendo Game Boy inspired case that they can’t sell due to royalties and trademark issues or something I don’t understand. That’s unfortunate, because these would fucking sell as many units as there are iPhone 4s out there. Nintendo, why don’t you just demand 50% of the product revenue and help us all out? Fuck you.

1 Million Miles Per Gallon*

I have always loved Japanese made cars. There’s something about their design, style, and interface that resonates with me. It’s probably because I’m Asian. More appealing, they give you like a billion miles per gallon. Just kidding, but here is Toyota’s Prius C (the C is for City) which is like the current Prius’ kid brother. It looks sporty and like a robot so I’m impressed. Toyota wants to start a green line built completely around the Prius, similar to how Scion is their sport line and Lexus is their luxury line. I’m debating if I want to wait for this car or get a Honda CR-Z. If I didn’t have to dress up like a boss everyday, I would just bike everywhere. Maybe that would help my fat ass shed a few pounds.

Practicality Out The Window

This is pretty freaking sweet. I love sushi, and more importantly, I love ikura. For those who don’t speak Spanish, that’s salmon eggs. Now I can have it as my iPhone 4 case all the time. Wait, how is this suppose to fit in my pocket comfortably? Wait, it has to sit on it’s FACE the entire time? This is one expensive accident waiting to happen. I appreciate the hard work, Japanese people. But much like your tentacle porn, anime porn, and eating dolphins, this too may not be that popular. You can follow the links and buy the impractical case for yourself.

Is It Time?

Samsung is releasing the Infuse 4G some time this year. As a long time iPhone 3G user, this gives me mixed feelings. I hear so much shit about the iPhone 4 in terms of hardware and software issues. It’s disheartening and takes away my confidence in buying whatever hot variation they may or may not release this summer. I’m sure Apple will work out the kinks and bugs and make their new phone desirable, but there are SO MANY other options. I’ve been a long admirer of HTC phones, they’re big and beautiful. Sadly, few companies can compete with the easy and streamlined (if not limiting) user-interface on the iOS. These other phones look great, people love the customization options with Android, and you generally get MUCH MORE (usually in terms of hardware) with other phone companies. I’ve paid for a lot of applications, have MobileMe, and have my entire life backed-up on my phone. I suppose I could ALWAYS use my iPhone 3G as a fancy iPod Touch. But how lame is that?

I’ll Take One

Seeing this made my childhood flash before my eyes. I spent countless hours, days, and weekends playing this game until I maxed out the game clock and did everything imaginable. I’m still haunted by Aerith’s death every now and then, reaching out to her in my sleep. Damn you, Sephiroth! I will get my revenge!

Imagine Rapture

If anyone ever had a chance to play BioShock, they would know that it was an eerie, deep, though-provoking, memorable, and fucking awesome game. It touched on ideas of ambition, freedom, and the price of an Utopian society. It really was science fiction at its finest. Irrational Games recently released the original pitch for BioShock. It is noticeably different from the final product, but it is equally as interesting and creepy. Here’s quote from one of the audio logs you would find in the game.

“Most of his teeth were gone… only a few remained in front and they were covered with a tough scabrous material with visible mineral striations… similar to what you’d find in a barnacle…” – Autopsy report, Isla de Salvacion, April 12, 2007″

Follow the link to read the entire pitch, it’s almost as amazing as seeing Salma Hayek naked. Almost.

iPhone HD

I’m pretty sure 90% of the people I know own an iPhone. Can you blame them? It’s awesome. “AT&T service sucks.” Yes, and so does your mom, and I’m actually thankful she does. In any case, if Apple follows its own trend, a new phone is due this summer. Luckily for me, I’m eligible for an upgrade in December. Wait, that’s at least 5 additional months I have to wait. I HATE YOU, AT&T!

This new iPhone looks sick though. To clear any confusion, it’s not going to be on the 4G network, I read extensively (overheard some random strangers) that no cellular company is currently implementing a true 4G network yet. Yes, Sprint customers, that means you’re being conned. It’s going to have a front facing camera, flash, a frying pan, guns, breasts, and will dispense money. I know you’re jealous, it’s all right, “I heard the iPhone was coming to Verizon.” Yes, I heard that too, 3 years ago, asshole.

Bamboo Car

The Japanese must take us for fools. Just because it comes out of Japan doesn’t make it awesome. They have created cars made out of bamboo and are selling it for around $10,000. That’s like me selling you a bicycle for $4,000 after you saw me steal it from you. What the fuck? This makes my dick so soft, people will pay for anything they think is eco-friendly. Guys, I have an idea, it’s called walking. Or taking the bus. Think about it.
